A work queue, sometimes referred to as a work basket, is a container for related assignments.  Work queues are aligned to specific work groups, based on several factors.  The work queue that an assignment belongs to is displayed on the assignment, as shown below.  The portion after the period represents a suffix, which allows the system to sort work and distribute it to the appropriate work group.

Work Queue Types

There are 3 different types of work queues used.  These types are preset for each assignment in the system and determine who is responsible for doing the work.

Pending

When the system is waiting for something from an external party, assignments are placed in a pending work queue.  These are not assigned to users, but can be processed by a user.  For example, if a customer response to a request for information, a user can provide that information and complete the assignment to advance the workflow.

System

System assignments are displayed while the system is completing an action.  These are not assigned to users, but may have alternate flow actions available, such as the ability to cancel the action being executed.

User

User assignments require a human to complete them and are assigned to one, or more, work groups.
